Finished the laser cutter project! There are still a few things to add, like the exhaust blower, and air assist. Thanks to David and Greg for help on this project.
The first test subjects for engraving were glass and anodized aluminum. Since I don't have an exhaust system connected yet, these two materials create virtually no smoke.
Below is a rastered image on black anodized aluminum created from an already low resolution color image. The large square is 20mm wide. The horizontal lines are caused by the rough surface of the extrusion.
Glass coaster being engraved with my Capoeira group's logo for an ornament for the maestre's Christmas tree. The glass is covered with a wet paper towel during engraving to keep the surface cool.

Engraved the Boston Dynamics (of Big Dog Robot fame) logo on the back of the phone of my friend who works there. The engraving looked stunning, and it turned out bright white. Laser speed was set to 150mm/s, and 30% power.
